Thousand Forces

2019 - Present

Independent Project

Thousand Forces is an ongoing project, focusing on recent and current incidents around the world, particularly taking the Hong Kong as a trigger, a chisel, to dig. Now following and researching the even of Wuhan Coronavirus, collecting media materials from China and other sides.

Design Tools:

City Generator: CAD

Image Application: Photoshop, Cinema 4D

Data Collecting: SQL

Data Visualization: Illustrator, Tableau

Virtual Reality Development: Unity

Thousand forces formed into one single thread, thousands threads formed a string, strings are bonding together to form a giant, a monster.

As a duo project of 44:44, Thousand Forces will also use VR set to invite the viewer enter the world of forces, the monster temple where one will see thousand strings forming into a monster.

Is it a puppet or is it the master of all?

Project Goals and Importance:

This project attempts to explore the mist behind this ongoing history and to discuss the relation of power and individual, and finally to set the question and discover the answer.

  1. Research and visit the Hong Kong event, and compare to other ongoing events happening at the same moment; Extract data from interview and networks to build a net of media scandal;

  2. Create an interactive VR application that explores the ideology of this project.

Addressing the project:

General Step:

  1. Collecting materials from fieldwork, analyzing the current data from social media, organizing the materials from interviews and research;

  2. Analyzing various as a whole, developing a theory behind all the threads, taking this theory as an object and using VR to give it a body.

Goal 1 Specific Steps:

  1. Follow and visit the events happening in different places in Hong Kong;

  2. Document whatever I see, I hear, I notice and I feel;

  3. Interview different people in Hong Kong;

  4. Collect and select material from different side of social media;

  5. Develop a visualization based on the observation and research;

  6. Analyze these events around the world and find the similarity;

  7. Develop a theory based on the analysis.

Goal 2 Specific Steps:

  1. Take the theory from Goal 1 to a brainstorm;

  2. Develop a model based on the theory;

  3. Develop the method of interaction;

  4. Final prototype.

Ideology:

    There are so many issues in this world, and some of them are actually not that complex. Things happened in Catalonia, Scotland, Chechnya, Crimea, Israe-Pakistan, Cyprus, Kosovo, East Timor and Western New Guinea, East Ukraine, Sudan, Rwanda, Iraq, Syria, and ISIS. These complexities can be caught a main thread by researching details. At lease if you come closer, it gets clearer.

    But HK problem have layers beyond layers, a cube full of strings after another cube. It is complex in dimensions – horizontally compare from international society and human modern history – at beginning, these street protests might have a clear conclusion, yet it gets more perplexing when you observe.

    I don’t think this world will get any better, and most likely it can only get worse. (here, in 2020, I have to believe this saying gets more and more convincing.) I, sometimes, think that this might be a rehearsal for something more destructive. If we have adjusted this major change in catastrophe, and we fell into the flow, what choice we can make?

    In those great changes, every news, compose and spread, is manipulated, not matter it is from inside or outside of Wall. It feels like lost in a block of mist. A ghost field puzzled by the fog from the name of a Nation. The glory built by sacrifice, protected by lies. This so-called peace is fragile and constructed by innocent chesses.

    This fogs poisoned everyone. Illness is never alone, it is a part of larger network. Environment, politics, society, history are in it. Family, education, daily lives, working are in it. In this network, the appearance of illness has symbolled the devastation of system. People in downstream are saving people in the river without knowing what happened at the upstream. Everything is tangled now, nurturing, reflecting and defining each other.

    They have covered our mouths. Now they want us to cover our children’s eyes.

    I want to see it with my own eyes, experience and document with my own body. I don’t want to read from news. At least now, I won’t witness this truth with a media in the middle. This power of conflict, the power of contradiction, are becoming strings beneath our steps in this current running planet. These strings push all the conflicts tangled together. These forces formed into an unknown. Or it is what we are so familiar with since the first bright sight shines in our eyes.

    Hong Kong is experiencing its most violent and dangerous moment since Mao’s Cultural Revolution.

    I received various information about this activity from three mainstream media. Mainland media, most of U.S. media, western social media and local Hong Kong media. None of them are propagating the same facts on the same events. I did my own experiment in detecting the speeches in these media and researching about how many accounts got blocked. Such media spreading is easily misleading people to fall into the survivorship bias, which will force people to pick a side. I have decided to be there in person and witness the history.

    I went to Hong Kong in the early September and stayed at there for two months. I had the chance to interview and talk with 69 people. Most people said that they have participated in at least one protest. Only 8 people think that protesters’ acts are illegal and unnecessary, the other accept that this is not excessive violence but a rightful act of defense to police’s overly-used force.

    A week after the 70th anniversary of national day of PRC, my mom visited me in Hong Kong. On October 26th, after dinner, accidentally, we ran into a rally occurred in a park in Central Hong Kong. A rally had been described as “peaceful” later while my mom got injured by protecting me from attacks of a protester.

    Thinking of the banality of evil from Eichmann in Jerusalem by Hanna Arendt, the line between injurer and victim is now blurry, the platitude of injurer and the immorality of victim are combined, they fell into the trap of power to believe this is for the greatness. I believe the basic of “good” is the “truth,” the brutal truths to be spread in society can lead us to the “good.” But it is impossible to process. Power and economy need this “fake” to operate. The supersession of power and the damage of economy lead to the conflict, the war, while power and economy are the true foundation of a society by manipulating “media” to achieve the puppet show of citizens. When the puppets are reviving with their thoughts and try to cut the string that tie them up, the power can only delete the truth from the puppet and insert the “fake”, and pretend to be normal.

    This is what I have addressed in the joint project of Thousands Force 千魄万力 about Hong Kong protest, the project 44:44, dedicated to the year of 1989, the day of 6/4.

    I have the chance to talk and have interviews with some locals of Hong Kong, shop owners, tourists from mainland and other countries, students from regional, mainland and other countries, in total of 69 people I have talked with; 47 people of them said that they have participated in at least one protest, including human-chain, sit-in gathering or mask protest,  and 28 people are allowed me to taking pictures and recordings, and 6 people said they performed certain violent behaviors toward the police. I assumed, at the beginning, that among these 69 people, the view that against protesters using excessive violence may be the major portion. However, only 8 people think that protesters’ acts are illegal and unnecessary, the other accept that this is not excessive violence but a rightful act of defense to police’s overly-used force.

only a few people allowed me to take pictures of them.

   I registered two Twitter accounts and two Weibo accounts, followed two different group of accounts which hold the opposite opinions on Hong Kong issue, to track the numbers of accounts have been blocked or deleted on daily basis.

   The day I started to document was June 1st, and the last day was November 28th.

   For the accounts that support mainland, the number of accounts on Twitter I followed, on the first day, was 91, and on the last day, the number was 30. On Weibo, the number was 48 to 37.

   For the accounts that support Hong Kong protest, the number on Twitter was 19 to 8. On Weibo, the number was 24 to 0.

    The complexity of Hong Kong cannot be simply addressed by a few pages of words. It involves not just mainland of China, and also the other blocs of power.

   As the trigger of this project, I then continue to research other similar problems in the world.

   There are 13 cases I have included in this project ( now added the case of Covid-19.). These projects share the same issue that power, media and people circulate a constantly restrictive but interactive relationships.

   13 cases ( now 14 case) are:
